Dr. Helen Poland established
the Old Waterloo Equine Clinic
in 1981. She has developed OWEC into a well respected equine
practice in Virginia's Hunt Country. Dr. Poland's veterinary interests
include internal medicine, sports medicine, and in
combining acupuncture with traditional western medicine.
She completed the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society's
(IVAS) required course work in 2001-2002.
In
2005, she became fully
accredited to perform veterinary acupuncture after finishing the
required field
hours and case
presentations.
Dr. Poland graduated from Colorado State University Veterinary School
in 1980. Before entering veterinary school she was a professor at CSU
in the meteorology department where she specialized in atmospheric
chemistry and air polution. She holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry from
Indiana University.
Prior to starting OWEC, she came
to Virginia for a one year
internship at a sports medicine/reproduction practice in
Charlottesville. Dr. Poland has served the veterinary profession well
as she is the founder of the Virginia Association of Equine
Practitioners, has written articles on surgical procedures and
reproduction in professional journals, and served on the Virginia
Board of Veterinary Medicine for two terms (1989-1997).
